I knew about Axel's feelings for my mom for as long as I could remember. He would always look at her with such longing in his eyes. And she would always blush and look away.
One day, when I was 16, I came home from school and found my mom and Axel in the living room. They were kissing. I was so shocked that I just stood there and watched for a moment.
My mom saw me and gasped. She pulled away from Axel and looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"I'm so sorry, sweetie," she said. "I didn't mean for you to see this."
I didn't know what to say. I just turned and ran out of the house.
I didn't see my mom or Axel for the rest of the day. I went to a friend's house and stayed there until it was late. When I finally went home, my mom was asleep in bed. I crept into the room and lay down next to her.
"I'm sorry, Mom," I whispered. "I didn't mean to overreact."
My mom sighed. "I know, honey. It's just...complicated."
I didn't say anything. I just held her close.
The next morning, I woke up to find my mom gone. I got out of bed and went to the kitchen. My dad was sitting at the table, drinking coffee.
"Where's Mom?" I asked.
My dad looked up at me. "She's gone," he said.
"Gone?" I repeated. "Where did she go?"
"She left with Axel," my dad said.
I felt like my world had been shattered. My mom was gone. And she had gone with the man I had always known she loved.
I didn't speak to my mom for years. I was angry and hurt. But I also missed her dearly.
One day, I got a call from my mom. She said she wanted to see me. I agreed to meet her at a coffee shop.
When I saw my mom, I was shocked. She had changed so much. She was thinner and her hair was graying. But her eyes were still the same. They were still full of love.
"I'm so sorry, sweetie," she said. "I never meant to hurt you."
I didn't know what to say. I just hugged her.
My mom and I have been rebuilding our relationship ever since. It's not easy, but we're both committed to making it work.
I've learned a lot about love and betrayal in the past few years. I've learned that love can be messy and complicated. And I've learned that it's always worth fighting for.
Epilogue
My mom and Axel are still together. They've been through a lot in the past few years, but they've come out stronger than ever.
I'm happy for them. They deserve to be happy.
And I'm grateful that I have my mom back in my life. She's the best mom anyone could ask for.
I love you, Mom.
