  • 1 skein of worsted weight yarn in main color (MC)
  • 1 skein of worsted weight yarn in contrasting color (CC)
  • US size 8 (5mm) knitting needles
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge

18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

Instructions

  1. CO 120 sts in MC.
  2. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist the sts.
  3. Work in stockinette stitch (K all sts) for 4 inches.
  4. Begin cable pattern:
    1. Sl 1, K2, *Sl 2, K2, psso
  5. Repeat Row 4 until cowl measures 20 inches from the cast on edge.
  6. Divide the sts evenly onto three needles.
  7. Join the yarn to the first needle and work in stockinette stitch for 6 inches.
  8. Begin shaping the hood:
    1. K2, *K2tog, K1
  9. Repeat Row 8 until there are 60 sts remaining.
  10. K2tog across the row.
  11. Cut the yarn, leaving a tail for weaving in.
  12. Weave in all loose ends.

Finishing

Block the cowl by gently stretching it to shape and pinning it out on a blocking board. Allow the cowl to dry completely before wearing.

  • For a more fitted cowl, use a smaller needle size.
  • For a looser cowl, use a larger needle size.
  • You can also experiment with different cable patterns.
